STRICTLY Come Dancing was back tonight for another action-packed extravaganza – with Caroline Quentin and Johannes Radebe leaving the competition. The pair were up against Maisie Smith and Gorka.

We’re now six weeks into 2020’s StrictlyCome Dancing and Saturday’s show started to look a little bare as the remaining seven celebrities taking to the dance floor.

Judge Motsi Mabuse returned from her two weeks in isolation just in time to see HRVY shoot back up to the top of the leaderboard with full marks for his impressive Couple’s Choice performance with partner Karen Hauer.

He was closely trailed by Maisie Smith and Gorka Marquez who once again dazzled the judges with a beautiful quickstep, ending up with a near-perfect score of 29.

At the other end of the leaderboard sat Clara Amfo and Aljaz Skorjanec who were given just 19 points thanks to a series of noticeable mistakes in their jive. Bill Bailey, Ranvir Singh and Jamie Laing each earned a score of 24.

The public decided it was Clara and Jamie who would face each other in the dance off and fight for their place in the competition.

After both celebs performed their dances again, the judges made different decisions on who should stay for the first time this series.

Deciding to back Clara and Aljaz, Craig Revel Horwood said: “My goodness it’s a really difficult one, both couples I thought were absolutely incredible and danced with so much passion and love.”

Motsi, on the other hand, chose to save Jamie and Karen and declared it the “toughest decisions I’ve ever had to make”. “based on that dance off only I saw one couple that did their choreography and had all the steps correct and I saw another couple who had a mistake in the steps and in the timing,” she added.

The final decision came down to head judge Shirley Ballas, who saved Jamie and Karen. “Well this is a very difficult series, I mean every couple is outstanding and I felt on this occasion that both couples totally lifted their game, but there was one couple they just convinced me. They had conviction from step to step, they believed in their performance and therefore I’m going to save Jamie and Karen,” she said.

Shirley’s decision marked the end of Clara’s Strictly journey. “I’ve had the best time ever, the best time ever and got a new friend for life. I’ve loved it, its one of the best things I’ve ever ever done, its been a dream come true,” she said when asked by presenter Tess Daley how she’d found her time on the show.

Aljaz also had kind words to say about his dancing parter, saying: “First I’m really gutted. All I really want to tell you is I’m so happy we got to do Lady Clamalade, the Claraston, which I’ve never done before in my life, the Clarasambafo you are a dream to be around, you’re a beautiful girl inside out, I hope that people at home got to see that. This series has been so special and its only because of you, thank you so much. I’m going to miss dancing with you.”

Theatres across the country may still be closed thanks to coronavirus restrictions, so the pressure was on for Strictly Come Dancing to deliver on Musicals Week. And with no couples scoring under 20 points, it’s safe to say it exceeded expectations.

Pop star HRVY shot back to the top of the leaderboard, despite never having seen the musical on which his performance was based, A Chorus Line. His partner Janette Marara quickly rectified that during rehearsals and their American smooth to “One (Singular Sensation)” from the show earned them an impressive 29 points.

“We knew on week one what a fabulous talent you were, but what I celebrate is you do not sit on your talent,” judge Motsi Mabuse told the 21-year-old. “I think this was the dance of the season, the dance of the decade.”

Maisie Smith and her partner Gorka Marquez also pleased the judges – Craig Revel Horwood, Shirley Ballas and Mabuse – with their jive to “Little Shop Of Horrors” from the show of the same name. They came second in the final rankings, with a total of 28 points including a 10 from Ballas.

It was JJ Chalmers and Amy Dowden who brought up the rear with 20 points. Opening the show with a charleston to “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang” from the stage production of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, the couple received tough criticism from the judges and eventually found themselves in the bottom two and in the dance off.

They were joined by Made In Chelsea star Jamie Laing and his professional partner Karen Hauer, whose jive to “Everybody’s Talking About Jamie” from the musical of the same name landed them in joint fourth place along with Bill Bailey and Oti Mabuse.

However, it was to be Chalmer’s turn to exit the series after the judges failed to save him in the dance off. Mabuse tried her best to save the Invictus Games champion, saying: “I actually think we saw two different dancing styles which both have their own qualities; both energetic, both so great at this dance off – very difficult decision. I saw a little hiccup with one dance, so I’m saving JJ and Amy.”

But she was outvoted by Ballas, who praised Laing’s “sheer determination” and Revel Horwood, who said: “I think both couples danced to the best of their abilities and both couples upped their game considerably.”

When asked about his time in the competition, Chalmers said: “I’m unbelievably proud. I never thought I would make it this far, I’ve gotten half decent maybe at something which I had no clue about to begin with and I’ve enjoyed every second of it, it has just been an absolute blast. It’s just a privilege to be in this long. I mean this competition is insane! To be counted among that cast at this stage in particular means the world to me. It’s meant everything. It’s been an unbelievable challenge, well outside my comfort zone but I’ve had this one [Amy] to just keep me in it and I can’t quite express what she means to me.

She’s lived through so much in her own right in fairness and I know that any day she can wake up and she could be hospitalised essentially so she lives fearing she’ll let people down. But the way you’ve built me up, you could never let me down.”

Dowden was more than happy to return the compliment, adding: “It has been an absolute honour to be your partner and most importantly friend, throughout your Strictly experience. He is, and everybody would agree, one of the world’s most truest gentlemen. I honestly believe from working with JJ over the last few months I’ve become a better person and I’ve learned so much. The way he faces challenges with such strength and determination, you have helped me for the rest of my life on how to face my own personal challenges. And honestly I’m so proud of every single step you’ve performed on this floor, I just had the best time.

I didn’t think I could possibly fall in love with Strictly any more and this year my heart is just beaming full of Strictly and that’s down to absolutely everybody and I love you all.”
